What is Hosting?
Hosting is the name given to the service that stores your website files until they are needed, that is, when someone visits your site.
Once your website is complete, your site files are transferred to a server, a computer with a constant high-speed connection to the internet. When a visitor hits your site, the server sends those files to the visitor's computer, and your site is displayed on their monitor.
A hosting account is usually paid for by the month or year, and the price can vary depending on the amount of space a website's files need on the server's hard-disk - in other words, how big the site is.
The cost of hosting is also dependent on the monthly data-transfer a website requires. Sites using more webspace or attracting a high number of visitors will need a greater data transfer allowance than smaller ones.
Which Hosting Package Will I Need?
The package you'll need for your site depends on your website's size, the amount of traffic (number of hits) you are hoping to get, and any special requirements eg. forms and databases included in your site. Unless you know how big your site will be (or already have a website), we suggest that you start with the smallest package, and upgrade only when you need to. This way you won't be paying for facilities you don't use.
What is Webspace?
Webspace is the total amount of space your website files take up on the server's hard-disk.
What is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth (also known as 'data transfer') is the amount iof data transferred between the server and end-users within a certain time period, usually one month. So, if your website files need a webspace of 10Mb, for example, and you get 5000 hits to your site in one month, your total bandwidth usage will be 10Mb X 5000, or 50,000Mb.
What are Mailboxes?
Mailboxes are used for email addresses linked to your site's address, such as info@yourcompany.com or dave@yourcompany.co.uk. Incoming emails to your chosen address can then be forwarded to any email address (eg. your own Yahoo, BT Internet or Hotmail account) or linked directly to your POP3 email application, eg. Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. All Baloogi hosting customers can also use our online Webmail service completely free!
What are AutoResponders?
Autoresponders are emails automatically sent out to your customers. If a customer emails an enquiry, for example, you can set up an autoresponder to reply immediately thanking them for their enquiry.
